We had a busy weekend of championship action in both hurling and camogie.
Our Junior F side started the weekend by hosting O’Dwyers of Balbriggan. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the lads as our visitors ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-20 to 1-5. The lads are fixed to play table toppers in Erins Isle in the last game on 30th August, but are out of the running for a knock-out spot.
Our Intermediate hurlers were up next on Saturday night against O’Tooles, who were considered favourites on a certain social media outlet, but our boys weren’t using AI to predict the outcome 🙂
It was very close throughout the first half with Kevin’s leading 1-8 to 0-6 at half time thanks to a Christopher Tuite goal that nearly wasn’t, but thankfully momentum was on his side after a jinky jivey nearly saved move.
Kevin’s started well in the second half adding another 2 points, before O’Tooles started to claw the lead back. They finished with a flourish and were piling on the pressure with a few goal chances that were saved, including a 21 yard free that was tapped out for a 65 by Karl Grogan. The visitors eventually took the lead in the last minute of the game with a goal that was subsequently ruled out as the referee had called a penalty, which was then converted. O’Tooles lead by two in added time and it looked like they were leaving with full points, but up stepped super sub Adam Mitchell – who was on the receiving end of a pass from Daan O’Loughlin in the middle of the park – and grabbed a goal with seconds left on the clock, finishing the game 2-14 to 1-16.
A superb game throughout, with both sides contesting every ball like their lives depended on it. What was most satisfying about the result was seeing so many young players who have come up through the ranks from Nursery grade and make such a strong contribution to the clubs recent success. Well done all, but especially our boys in blue. Kevin’s are sitting in 3rd place after 4 games with 2 Wins, 1 Draw and a Loss. Next up are St Vincents away!
Our Junior D hurlers were hosting Trinity Gaels on Sunday morning. Our boys lead from 15 mins right until the end. A big factor in the win was the broader panel and being able to bring on a full compliment of subs who all contributed. Final Score 2-16 to 3-12. Next up are table toppers Erins isle. As Kevin’s are sitting in 2nd spot and are 2 points behind Isles, this game will decide who wins the group.
Our Intermediate 2 side threw in for their first championship game with Naomh Barrog. After a slow start the girls upped their intensity and were rewarded with 2 goals that left them 2 points up at half-time. Kevin’s improved again after the restart. Refusing to give up any goals chances and continuing to take some fine scores. The team was a real mix of youthful enthusiasm and experience. With a couple of minors playing their first game at Intermediate grade alongside some of the more experienced players. Final score 2-10 to 0-11. This was our girls first and last home game in the group series and will travel to play Clontarf on the 23rd of August and Kilmacud Crokes on the 6th September.
In the meantime our Junior Camógs will be in action on Tuesday when they travel across the Liffey to play St Vincents. Best of luck to our girls and don’t forget to send the PR team a photo and little report!
