We were delighted to be able to host our Winter Challenge in the local catchment area this year. Many thanks to Iseult Macklin and Marc McGlade for coordinating the event and thanks also to Anthony in Brian Borus for dropping in and refereeing a few games and introducing us to the European Wall Ball format. Massive thanks to the team in TK2 Community Centre in Charlemont St for facilitating and to everyone who made the new one walls happen. We hope to see lots of handball action in the new year!
Big congrats to Fred Macklin who went unbeaten on the night and decided to win this year’s event the hard way. Fred disposed of Matthew McGlade at the semi-final stages in a cracking game with plenty of twists and turns which finished 11-9 and then beat last years champion Alfie McCarron 11-8 in the final. Alfie himself had arrived unbeaten at the final having beaten his Colaiste Eoin class mates Séadna Clancy and Aodhán Ó hAoláin in the quarter and semi-final stages.
Tristan Tennyson and Cody Kenny warmed up the crowd in the Plate final, with Kilkenny bound Tennyson taking the honours in another entertaining game. Cody Kenny’s cross court kill shots put Tristan Tennyson under serious pressure throughout, but Tristan hung on for an 11-7 win. Rumour has it that Santas elves and working hard to build him a trophy cabinet for all the recent silverware he acquired with the club before heading to Kilkenny.
It’s great to see GAA Handball thriving in Dublins South Inner City and hopefully we will see the introduction of some 40×20 and 60×30 courts in the coming years.
