Kevin’s will host Clonad of Laois in the Quarter Finals of the Leinster Junior Hurling Championship. Our hurlers are well prepared after coming through a tough Dublin Junior A Campaign. Kevin’s have had a few successful Leinster Leagues in recent years and beat Clonad in the League earlier this year on a score line of 1-13 to 1-10 in Dolphin Park. But league and championship are different beasts and this will be a first championship campaign for these squad members.
The club will have to look back to 2002 when they last represented the county in this particular competition. Back then Dublin were represented by the Intermediate Champions and Kevin’s took the honours on their 100 year anniversary by beating St Marks in a thrilling replay in Parnell Park. Current selector Paul Crampton was wing back on that squad and looks like he could still do a job, despite retiring a few years ago. The only player from that 2002 panel who is still togging out is Conor Bracken and he will be leading the Junior Gs into battle in the JG Final against Geraldine P. Moran’s tonight. Kevin’s made it all the way to the Leinster Final in 2002 only to be narrowly beaten by Kilkenny’s Blacks & Whites who also hosted the final. The club membership has also grown significantly since 2002 with teams at all levels in hurling and a growing camogie section with 2 adult teams. With the game being held local to the club catchment area, it would be great to see all the kids out supporting our first team.
Commencing in 2000 the competition is in its 25th year, but has never been won by a Dublin club. Only 4 Dublin clubs have made it to the final including Kevin’s (2002), St Vincents (2003), Naomh Fionbarra (2009) and Commercials (2022). All 4 sides have been beaten by Kilkenny or Wexford clubs in the final. Both Kevins and Clonad will be delighted to hear that this years draw sees both county representatives in the other side of the draw. No doubt Brian Óg Flannery will be hoping to emulate his uncle Donal Tutty (and possibly go one step further) who played on that 2002 team. While Kevin’s as a club will have a little more experience in this competition than their Laois rivals, there is a matter of the 1910 Leinster Championship when Kevin’s represented Dublin but were beaten by Laois at the semi-final stages. Come Saturday the 8th November, the boys will no doubt be focussing on making their own history!
Kevins will commence their Leinster campaign on Saturday the 8th November at 1.30 pm in O’Toole Park.
