Adult Camogie Preparations Underway

Our Adult Camogie Fixtures have been published and our girls will be competing in Intermediate 2 and Junior 4 championships. Kevins will be looking forward to this years championship as the impact of the clubs youth programme is beginning to show with a number of underage players coming through from Minor and Under 21 level to bolster the squad. Kevins reached the Intermediate 2 final last year and while they were disappointed with the outcome, they did secure promotion in the league this season.

Last years success at Junior 5 gave the girls a taste for success at adult level and while legendary camóg Claire Graham was central to the success, she was surrounded by a youthful squad. In a recent exclusive interview with the Wickla Warrior she revealed that last years championship win was very special. She’s been around the club for a long time now and it was her first championship win after many heart breaks! Claire originally got involved with underage teams when she moved to the area and started working in the local Griffith Barracks school on the South Circular Road. The clubs adult team wasn’t long up and running when Claire decided to transfer from her club in Wicklow. While a distant memory now she has the honour of playing with the Dubs, picking up an All-Ireland Premier Junior League title. After many years playing at Intermediate level, it was a big decision to step back to Junior last year, but on reflection it was the right one. While young at heart, Claire now considers herself a “veteran”, but the Junior gave her an opportunity to extend her playing career and also encourage some of the younger players to come through.  The Wickla Warrior is once again at the helm and is looking forward to it. Her eldest son Briain made his Under 8 hurling debut this year and will be on the line cheering on his Ma … There’s plenty of talent on the pitch to inject energy into the 2025 campaign. Every great team needs a full back from Tipp jokes Graham and no better woman than the experienced Mary Kinane to fill that position. Of course we have a few whipper snappers who have come up via the underage system as well. If you could plug Eimear O’Doherty into the national grid her energy would light up Dublin for a week, so you can probably guess why she is in the middle of the field. Another young lady who has come up through the ranks is Niamh Roe Ashe and proved to be a power house in the forwards when they won the Junior 5 last year. Every team has its characters and none better than Amanda Walton who proved recently that’s she not just a keeper on the pitch, but she’s an also a keeper off the field. So committed to the Kevins cause, Amanda organised her wedding in between league and championship campaigns and Claire was delighted to report that the wedding was “savage craic”!

Media shy Meadhbh Hicks is captain of the Intermediate squad this year! She does her talking on the pitch! Meadhbh has played all the way up through the ranks and has an impressive playing career already, captaining many underage Dublin teams and is the first club player to represent us a senior inter county level. Meadhbh took a back seat in recent years to concentrate on her education, but was back playing with the Dublin Under 23s this season who won an All-Ireland title. The squad includes a wide mix of players from Dublin and beyond and includes gardai, barristers, teachers, vets, engineers, radiologists and dog groomers to name a few. The diversity creates a great dynamic and a welcoming environment. Jenny Kearns is delighted to report that we aren’t short of leaders, which is great for the younger girls coming through. Jenny herself came up through the ranks and has been instrumental in the success of the camogie section. A past pupil of St Clares and resident of Harolds Cross, she is impressed with the group. Along with Eithne Moran, Jenny Kearns is the “mammy” on the team. This year Jenny took he mammy role one step further as she is now joined by her daughter Chloe, who like her mother leads from the front. Muireann O’Mahoney is another player who joined the squad this year and brought the average age down a bit. Muireann is also captain of the minor team this year and will have plenty of strong leaders around her that she can learn from.

The Junior 4s have the honour of opening the campaign at home and if last year’s final was anything to go by this is a squad worth watching. The minors will open their campaign the following Friday (away to Whitehall Colmcille) and then we have a quick turn around to another home game against Naomh Barrog in the Intermediate championship.
